A deviated septum occurs when the thin wall (nasal septum) between your nostrils is displaced to one side. Your septum anatomically separates your left nasal cavitiy from your right nasal cavity. The septum, in healthy people, is situated in the center of your nose, equally separating left and right sides. However, due to genetic factors (it can run in families) and nasal injuries (common in childhood), these are the main official causes, the nasal septum can become and remain displaced. This makes one nasal passage smaller than the other.

When a deviated septum is severe, it can block one side of your nose and reduce airflow, causing difficulty breathing, nosebleeds and other symptoms.
